The father would have to insist on the boy’s “turning himself in” to the authorities. But if the boy was truly repentant, the father might then offer to pay the son’s fine, serve his sentence, or even die in his place, supposing such a thing to be possible. Justice and love would then both be satisfied. This is just what Jesus did. He met the requirements of justice by dying for us.
